The Emoji Movie 2: Rise of the Smojis (2024)

The Emoji Movie 2: Rise of the Smojis is the second movie in The Emoji Movie franchise. It was released on November 20, 2020, and this film helped trap the Coronavirus.

A threequel, Rosy's Rampage, was released in 2025.

Sypnopsis[]

Alex adapts a new pet named Smojis, which are cute, emoji like creatures. After using a special machine to come out of the phone, Gene, Jailbreak and Hi-5 find out about the new trend called Smojis, and they get mad at Alex, who isn't even surprised to see the three emotions escape his phone. The next day, Alex and his Smoji is at school, and he sees all his friends get Smojis.

There's a villain inside the phone named Alpha, who uses his commands to turn Smojis into terrifying creatures named Pim Poms. Those transformed creatures constantly yell "Nashtanestash", and uses the Smoji Bite to kill Alex and his friends. Gene, Jailbreak and Hi-5 watch in horror, and realize that there's an acoploypse full of Pimpoms and Sashbanestashes. Poop comes out of the phone and joins the adventure to take down Alpha.

Controversal Changes[]

The film was a mixed bag of good and worse. While it does build up from the first film, the whole "Smoji" plot serves nothing to the story, and the Alpha character from the 1997 series Alpha's World who faded into obscurity after the success of the spin-off Yellow's Land, was stolen from Jay TV (now Jelliomath). The main director of the film, Trombone Trumpet (who also made the 2024 series !Dora!), specifically said that he thought Alpha was now open-domain like Winnie the Pooh, but in reality, Alpha was copyrighted still and Bluebuzz Pictures Corporation Inc. still has the rights to Alpha, who eventually also becomes the main villain of the 2024 film co*ckingville, directed by S4C, Nintendo, Ferguson Bros and TikTok.

When the film's first trailer came out, Lady Gaga decided to rename to Lady Gene-Gene, and the trailer managed to get rid of the coronavirus instantly. It was so popular that the trailer played over-and-over as the only "commercial break" on Nickelodeon. Hands Cable decided to replace the film with a much more exciting movie, that being Christopher Robin Christmas, a sequel to Christopher Robin Halloween from 2019. The Powerpuff Girls also came back on Cartoon Network thanks to the film's first trailer. The first episode debuted is a parody of the Yellow's Land episode Inside the Nintendo Switch, which was S1E2 of the show released in 1997, one month after the premiere of S1E2 of Alpha's World. Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup go into Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the one-time launch title of Nintendo Switch when it launched in the 1900s.

The film got released, and when Sony offered the Royal Family to watch The Emoji Movie 2: Rise of the Smojis, Queen Elizabeth II died of excitement and joy. Now, Allison Hallow, the main creator of Yellow's Land, takes over as both US and UK president, and is nicknamed Queen Elizabeth III and Donald Trump II.

Unsatisfied with the first movie, critics loathed the idea of a sequel, so there was no sign of a sequel until January 2019, when a sequel was announced. Director of the first film, Tony Leondis, said: "We understand the hate of the first movie, but we'll change hands for the worse to make the sequel Wreck-It Ralph 3: Ralph Escapes the Real World standards.

All of the returning characters reprise their roles, with Vailskibum, former actor of the main character from Alpha's World, acting as the main villain Alpha.

Music[]

Patrick Doyle returned to compose this film. Beyoncé recorded a song for the film's end credits, "The Smashy Finger Family Song". Billie Ellish also let them use her song "The Bad Guy" for free.

Release[]

In March 2018, the film was scheduled to release on July 9, 2020. A month later, the release date was pushed back to July 16, 2020, switching places with Pixar's Soul. In May 2020, the release date was pushed back to November 20, 2020, switching places with Dreamworld's The Croods: A New Age.

Marketing[]

Similar to Paramount's Rumble, the teaser was shown before Connected, but not released online. An official trailer was released on May 12, 2020, and was heavily panned. A second trailer was released on July 5, 2020. A third and final trailer was released on November 16, 2020.

Video Game[]

The film's release was also preceded by a tie-in mobile game, Emoji Movie 2 Cyberchase Crossover, a crossover game that was released on iOS and Android with optional in-game purchases, they were removed and replaced with Super Smashy Maker Lite in 2022. They then made the Emojina video game console, which sold 3 copies.

The Emoji Movie 2 was released on Blu-Ray and DVD on February 14, 2021 by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Bluebuzz Pictures Home Entertainment and Bedroom Films.

The film grossed $2,000 in America, and everywhere else it made $4,000, adding up to $4,0000 making it the second lowest grossing film ever, behind.

Critical Response[]

The Emoji Movie 2 received very negative reviews, with review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes giving it the first ever 22% based on 7,594,000,000 reviews, which was canonically worse than the previous film, which had an average rating of 2.67/10. This film's average rating is 0.2/10. The site's critical consensus reads, "Small die or big fry, The Emoji Movie 2 holds the record for being the worst movie ever. " On Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating to reviews, the film has a weighted average score of 2 out of 100, indicating "overwhelming smojis", and making it the lowest-rated film on the site. Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film the first ever grade of "F--" from an F- to F scale. When asked about it's success, Sir Patrick Stewart said there will be emoji movie everything, from toys to diapers. The diapers have already sold 100,000,000,000 copies. They stopped being produced in late 2021.

Future[]

A third film, The Emoji Movie 3: Rosy's Rampage, was announced on December 24, 2021 to celebrate Christmas Day, and then released on July 19, 2024 to coincide with the Indonesian world premiere of Numberblocks Series 5b. The world has been ruled everywhere with The Emoji Movie since the second movie got advertised, and will be permanent until the end of time. Unlike this film, the third movie is an Apple TV+ exclusive.

Before the third movie's release, there were plans to make The Emoji Movie into a franchise. The Emoji Movie's Four-Year Output Plan includes the third and fourth movies, a whole TV series and video games for the forever-world Nintendo Switch, the one and only video game console in the entire world that has lasted since the 1900s. The fourth movie was announced to take place as a set-up of the TV series, called The Emoji Movie: From iPhone to MePhone, which guest starred Inanimate Insanity's MePhone. It's meant to be a crossover between BFDI, II and Emoji Movie. The TV series' first season also serves as Season 6 of BFDI, Season 4 of Inanimate Insanity and Season 1 of The Emoji Movie: Living the Object Style. Season 2 mysteriously removed BFDI and II with no lore nor season conclusion. TEM4 released in 2029 while TEM:LTOS ran from 2030-2039. The final installement in the franchise and the show's series finale, The Emoji Movie: Emojis in Hell, has been announced alongside Season 10 and eventually released immedeately in 2040 by Apple TV+.

Similar to Illumination's Megaverse, The Emoji Movie's big franchise would eventually be followed by a new movie franchise called Alexverse, which ran from 2045-2145. The first film was called Alex, released in 2045, and the final was Alex In Heaven, released in 2145. When The Emoji Movie's franchise went open-domain in 2150, BigBlueBubble (makers of My Singing Monsters) decided to revive the Alex series with a TV show to be released on kids' free third-party streaming services like Kidoodle. The series was announced just as simply "Alex", and was a retelling of the Alex franchise. The show ran from 2156 to 2159, and the show went obscure during its run.

NBCUniversal would make a horror movie franchise based on The Emoji Movie, released in 2160, with its final film releasing in 2199. Various reboots took place in-between 2206 to 3012. The final reboot was in 3012 as the horror version went open-domain in 3011. Books were published by Sega Publishing, from 3015 to 7000. When the rights came back to Sony on 7089, they decided that now is the better time to reboot the franchise. The first film reboot was announced on 7093, and was released on 7097 to celebrate the film's 5080's anniversary. The second film reboot, as well as the third, fourth, fifth and the tv series were released during their respective 5080th anniversaries. The final appearance of our Emoji heroes is in a surprise sixth movie reboot which only focused on the world ending, released in December 31, 9999 (the final day of the world's existence).
